The Yamas and Niyamas of Veganism

January 2016

A vegan diet is quite possibly one of the best expressions of adherence to the Yamas (restraints) and Niyamas (observances) of yoga, the do's and don'ts. In accordance to the Eight Limbs of Yoga of Patanjali, these Yamas and Niyamas are the first two limbs and foundations of the eight fold path which ultimately leads to attainment of spiritual enlightenment.

The Yamas, The Don'ts (Restraints)

Ahimsa- Non-harmning, Harmlessness
Aparigraha- Non-hoarding, Greedlessness
Asteya- Non-stealing, Non-covetousness
Brahmacharya- Self-restraint, Celibacy

Niyamas, The Do's (Observances)

Satya- Truthfullness, Honesty
Saucha- Cleanliness
Tapas-Self Discipline
Santosha- Contentment
Svadyaya- Self Study
Ishvara Pranidhana- Surrender to God

For today, we'll start with the Yamas...

YAMAS
What is a Yama?
A yama is a restraint. In one way, we can see this as the overarching practice of morality.

1. Ahimsa- Non-harming

Ahimsa is the first step to a compassionate heart. The recognition of all sentient beings as equal to each is the beginning stages and initial budding of enlightenment. When we have reached the point of cultivation of this very important Yama, we begin to realize our inherent oneness with all living beings. From this place of unified consciousness, we can begin to widen our circle of compassion to include all humans, animals, the planet, and in later stages, seeing and experiencing all of these relations as reflections of our constant and eternal relationship to God, tot he almighty One. Ahimsa, the non-harming of any life, is the first Yama, and first step upon the inner path to enlightenment. In Yoga, we want to be kind, compassionate and non-harming to any living being, because at a deeper level we know that every being is representative and reflective of our very own life. What we do to any being, we do to our Self. What a vegan, plant based diet lends itself to is the complete adherance to the principle of non-harming, especially to animals and at a personal, cellular level, our own body, cells and spiritual consciousness. When we choose to eat a plant-based diet, we are living peacefully with all life, humans, animals and Mother Earth. We are contributing to more sustainable agriculture for the planet, which helps in minimizing the green house gases and in turn of our inner choice, we're having better digestion as a reflection of a more peaceful and sustainable choice of food. In doing so, we are supporting the greening of Mother Earth, which ultimately brings more pure, fresh oxygen into the atmosphere which helps all life. Furthermore, we can rest both internally and externally, knowing what is inside us is Mother Earth's natural, God given bounty, and is easily digestible which actually aids in better digestion, which contributes to more efficient function of all the body's systems, and from a yogic standpoint, greater peace of mind due to a sattvic diet, and positive and supportive choices for the planet and all life. The vegan,plant-based diet is by nature sattvic, meaning, pure, divine. The colon reflexes to the brain, so the increased metabolism and digestion of a plant-based diet is actually contributing to an increase of releasing positive hormones in the body due to the gut/brain connection, there is a quicker reflex from the brain as a result of a quicker release of the colon. This allows our inner being to feel peace, calm and collectiveness. Ultimately, when we are choosing to treat our inner body peacefully, there is generally a greater ease and peacefulness amongst our external choices due to our clarity of mind and inner peace of the gut wisdom given to us by the planet based diet. We become lighter in mind and body, which allows for the deepening of yoga practice through deeper breaths, deeper twists, lightness of mind and body and ultimately longer and deeper meditations in our practice. When the breath is calm, the mind is also calm and silent. When our mind is silent, we can progress upon the yogic path into deeper meditations and ultimately, reach Samadhi, Nirvikapla Samadhi, or undifferentiated enlightenment.

2. Asteya- non-stealing, non-covetousness

Asteya is one of the strongest Yamas with regards to respecting the lives of all sentient beings. This yama reflects in our consciousness in respects to not taking what doesn't belong to us, or what is not given freely. In yoga, we see this as not cheating ourselves in a pose by going to the next level of the pose before we are ready. This ensures safety in our practice and the beauty of the natural unfoldment of yogic posture in accordance to the tradition of yoga abhyasa, yogic practice of asanas. When we allow ourselves to be in a pose as our breath unfolds, we are able to enjoy the sweetness of the posture and the flowering of consciousness as the posture unfolds. If we were to try the next level of the pose before we've mastered the previous step, we'd have to start again, as the posture opens like a flower petal blooming, one at a time. When we allow what our body and consciousness are ready for in each pose, moment to moment. We find an ease in the perfection of our postures, strong, steady, calm and conscious as a result of our willingness to let the generosity of our practice present itself in real time. The practice of Asteya in our yoga practice is represented by not stealing our pose or breath from ourselves. If we find we're holding our breath in a pose, that's our indication to back off and soften the edge. If a beginner is still finding their stability in their feet, Asteya looks like perfecting the stability and grounding of the posture before going to the next step. Not cheating ourselves or stealing the moment or opportunity for us to really let the consciousness of the posture unfold. Asteya in accordance to veganism is very simple. We looks at what is given, accepting with gratitude, and we gain acceptance of what is not given, having gratitude for what we have and what is freely given instead. In a plant based diet, the fruits of the trees, the herbs and crops of the fields are given to us freely. We aren't taking the lives of any sentient beings or anything part of their life force or inner resources who aren't giving their lives or resources of their own volition. Instead, we are honoring the love and sustenance given to us from God and Mother Earth in the form of plants that are meant for our consumption.

According to the bible, Genesis 1 verse 29
"And God said, "Behold I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and ever tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given given every green plan for food."
We are given all our sustenance according to God, strictly from plants.

3. Brahmacharya-Celibacy, Abstinence.

This yama can also be interpreted as, "going for God or the Self."
"Brahm"-The Ultimate Reality, The Supreme, "Acharya"- Teacher
Usually, Brahmacharya is most generally referred to as abstinence of sexual activity. In this Yama, it is suggested we put our energy towards fostering relationships based upon understanding the highest truths which ultimately brings us to God. When we approach Brahmacharya from this respect, we can looking into the deeper truth that we should form relationships that foster our understanding of the highest truths. Brahmacharya strives to put the creative energy towards the Supreme rather than earthliness. In a plant based diet, we are Practicing Brahmacharya means that we use our sexual energy for building our relationship to our highest Self. In order to reach are highest spiritual Self, we ultimately begin to shift our diets to the lightest and most pure foods so our minds are calm for meditation and our concentration purely set upon God and the Supreme Truth. So in essence, a planet based diet actually aids in checking passions, calming the mind and fixating our focus and attention into our higher spiritual Self and God-Consciousness.

4. Non-hoarding, greedlessness

Aprigraha means having only what we need, not taking more than we need, and not being greedy. Biologically, human beings are herbivores, not omnivores or carnivores. The shape of our teeth, our digestion, our hands are all indications of herbivore traits. With a plant based diet, we have everything we need, all the vitamins and minerals. All of this comes from Mother Earth while living in harmony with all of life. A planet-based diet is greedlessness in the sense that it does not need to take more than what is provided by Mother Earth naturally.

Studies Confirm "Sound Therapy" Heals Arthritis, Cancer, Tinnitus, Autoimmune Disease and More Using Vibrational Frequencies

Posted by JB Bardot

Sound healing is the practice of using audio tones and vibrational frequencies to repair damaged tissue and cells within the body. It works on the basis that all matter is vibrating at specific frequencies, and sickness, disease, depression and stress causes human beings to vibrate at a lower frequency. Playing tones that promote healing, happiness and vitality will allow DNA strands to repair themselves, and several scientific studies have been conducted on the potential healing benefits of audio sound frequencies. Sound has been used as a healing tool for centuries, and is still regularly utilized by many different alternative healthcare centers. Tibetan singing bowels, tuning forks, drumming therapy, and even chanting are all used in sound therapy and many participants experience strong emotions during therapy sessions. Advocates of sound healing claim that it has the power to heal mental illness, arthritis, autoimmune disorders and can even shrink cancerous tumors. Learn about the different forms of sound healing and examine the evidence that supports its use as an alternative medical practice.

Dr Emoto's Messages from Water

Dr Masaru Emoto is a Japanese researcher at the Yokohama Municipal University who stunned the world with the release of his book, Messages from Water. Dr Emoto designed an experiment to test the effect of spoken words and music on water molecules. He placed several bottles of purified water next to each other and exposed each bottle to different spoken words, music or pictures. The words ranged from 'I love you' to 'you make me sick', and Dr Emoto experimented with different forms of music such as heavy metal and Mozart. The water was then frozen and Dr Emoto used a very powerful microscope to take high-speed photographs of the newly formed water crystals. The results were astonishing, and all of the samples that had been exposed to positive words and relaxing music formed beautifully intricate patterns and symmetrical, geometric shapes. By contrast, the samples that were exposed to heavy metal music and angry words were distorted and disharmonious. Dr Emoto claims that the results show that water is directly affected by outside influences such as sound, vibration, and frequency, and as human beings are 70% water, our health and wellbeing are also affected by these stimuli.

Cymatics And Sacred Geometery

Cymatics is the visible representation of sound and its study has been documented as far back as the 1600s in an essay by Galileo Galilei. It began gaining popularity in the 1960s when Dr Hans Jenny conducted several experiments that showed how sound could be converted into physical form. Jenny's experiments involved placing some form of powder of crystallized substance over a flat surface and connecting the surface to an amplifier or tonoscope that could cause the surface to vibrate at different musical tones and frequencies. As the tones were played, the powder would shift into different geometrical patterns which became more complex as the frequency was increased. The results of Jenny's experiments have been recreated by thousands of people all over the world, and typing cymatics into YouTube will bring up some truly startling videos showing how sound can influence physical matter.

Modern Forms Of Sound Healing

Clinics offering sound therapy can be found all over the world, and many offer a wide range of different treatments. Crystal bowls, shamanic drumming, tuning forks, and even didgeridoos are all utilized in sound healing and patients often take part in group sessions or workshops. Music therapy is a form of sound healing and is widely used in hospitals in the US to treat disorders such as schizophrenia, amnesia, depression, and can even assist those recovering from a stroke or other serious brain injury. Binaural tones are also widely used to promote different mental states, and musicians sometimes insert them into their music to create an effect on the listener. A wide number of guided meditations are available online that use binaural tones, particularly 528Hz which is known as the divine frequency, to bring the listener into a deep meditative state that allows the body to heal and repair itself.

Scientific Evidence for Sound Healing

A two year study supported by the Klaus Tschira Foundation in Germany proved that sound therapy was able to significantly reduce the symptoms of chronic tinnitus. Not only did sufferers report a significant decrease in their symptoms, MRI images of the subject's brains during treatment showed that sound therapy was able to activate certain areas of the brain that researchers believed were responsible for the unpleasant symptoms associated with tinnitus.

A study that examined the effects of music therapy on those with Huntington's disease was conducted by researchers at the University of Rochester in 2005 and involved the use of group singing, drumming, and music assisted relaxation. All of the 5 subjects who participated in the trial responded well to the use of sound therapy, and further trials are being organized to test the therapy on a wider range of subjects.

Researchers in the UK have found that sound wave therapy successfully cured 90% of male patients that were suffering from prostate cancer, and did so without any harmful side effects whatsoever. Dr Hashim Ahmed, who led the study at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation, stated "We're optimistic that men diagnosed with prostate cancer may soon be able to undergo a day case surgical procedure, which can be safely repeated once or twice, to treat their condition with very few side-effects."

Words and sounds are much more than just a method of communication. They are tangible forces that have a direct effect on our health and wellbeing. The study of quantum physics shows that the human body and the entire universe is made up of tiny pieces of matter vibrating at certain frequencies and joined together by magnetic forces. Exposing the internal organs and brain to different musical frequencies will encourage them to heal from within, and sound therapy helps to raise the frequency of the human body promoting health, vitality and spiritual wellbeing.
